- Wear layers – Invest in good quality outdoor clothing that will be comfortable, regulate your temperature and be light to carry around. Layer them up so you can add or remove them as required along your journey. A waterproof jacket is vital and a hat is very handy, whether it's to keep the sun off or keep the cold out.
- These shoes were made for walking – Having the right shoes goes without saying really. Invest in a good pair of boots which provide grip, ankle support and – most importantly – are comfortable. Be sure to wear in any new boots before you set off.
- Eat and drink plenty – Staying hydrated and getting with enough energy is key to keeping going comfortably on a long hike. Drink plenty of water and take more snacks than you think you'll need just in case.
- Prepare for any eventuality – Trips and falls happen, you could come down with a cold and the weather can be unpredictable. Have a simple first aid kit with you including plasters and paracetomol, some extra socks, wet wipes and tissues, and gloves - even in summer it can get cold, especially in the mountains. Also, make sure you know the phone number for Iceland's emergency services (it's 112, and you can also download their app), and let people know where you're planning to hike.
- Camera – Don't forget to stop regularly to take plenty of photos along the way, you're going to see some stunning scenery and you'll want to have the memories of it to show people and reminisce when you return.
- Watch out for trolls and elves – Iceland is the land of legend and folklore and around every corner creatures could be lurking, known as the hidden people. They are believed to protect the land and you don't want to upset them.
