Anchorage and the South holidays

The gateway to Alaska, Anchorage is the state’s largest city and main air hub. Perched on the shore of the sparkling Cook Inlet, with a panoramic backdrop of the Chugach Mountains, nearly half of Alaska’s population live here. The city boasts some interesting museums and galleries and great day hikes and bike trails, as well as a choice of shopping, restaurants and nightlife.

Anchorage is a modern city surrounded on all sides by wilderness. From here many of the state’s main attractions are easily accessible – head north to Denali National Park, east to the Wrangell Mountains and southwest to Katmai National Park and Kodiak Island.

Closer to hand on the Kenai Peninsula lie the ports of Whittier and Seward, embarkation points for onward journeys by boat to explore the glacier-strewn Prince William Sound and Kenai Fjords National Park. This area is best known for its marine wildlife – here you may see orcas, humpback and grey whales, as well as Steller’s sea lions, sea otters, porpoises and countless seabirds.

To the east lies Wrangell-St Elias National Park, which borders with Glacier Bay National Park, Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge and Canada’s Kluane National Park to form the largest protected area on the planet, justifiably recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Wrangell-St Elias alone is larger than Switzerland and boasts the world's largest non-polar icefield, as well as countless glaciers, mountains and a still-smoking volcano. The former mining settlements of Kennicott and McCarthy provide a glimpse into life in the heart of this vast Alaskan wilderness.
