Prices in Alaska are generally higher than elsewhere in the US, notably in more remote areas, and costs for eating out can be considerably higher.
In Alaska, banks are generally open from 10am to 6pm Monday to Friday. ATM’s are widely available and most are linked to international networks. Major credit cards such as Mastercard, Visa and American Express are widely accepted. Both debit and credit cards can be used to withdraw cash, but it is advisable to check applicable fees with your own bank or credit card company before you travel.
In more remote regions ATM’s will be fewer and we would recommend taking cash with you. Always stock up on food and petrol when travelling away from main centres.
Tipping is standard in the USA and usually expected at 15% for waiters, taxi drivers and hotel staff. Wildlife guides do not always expect tips, but if you feel you have been well looked after, a tip is appropriate.
