Reykjavik is compact, cosmopolitan and refreshingly different. Being just a three hour flight from the UK it's a great place for a weekend getaway at any time of year, and with our flexible city break you can choose from an outstanding selection of hotels and add in any number of excursions to discover the world’s northernmost capital and it’s surrounds.

  • Choose from a wide selection of accommodation in the city centre, from budget-conscious hotels and apartments to luxury and boutique properties
  • An excellent base from which to explore - the city is easily accessible on foot whilst a comprehensive range of pre-bookable excursions are available, taking you out of the city to explore the surrounding natural wonders
  • Fully independent trip with plenty of options to make it as busy or relaxing as you wish

Reykjavik is a place of many facets: the charming timber buildings of its historic heart are clustered around the city's centrepiece - a lake and bird sanctuary. In the bustling streets surrounding the cathedral and Parliament, you’ll find a plethora of cafés and other eating establishments. Reykjavik has more than its fair share of top class restaurants with many internationally-known chefs preparing a vast range of cuisine to the highest standards. And a trip to Iceland wouldn’t be complete without trying Pylsur - the very tasty Icelandic hot dog!

This modern and slightly quirky city is home to some fascinating examples of contemporary architecture – three must-see sites are its church Hallgrimskirkja, a skyline sentinel whose profile draws from the landscape's basalt columns, Perlan with its shimmering glass dome and the waterside Harpa Concert Hall, inspired by nature.

Where architecture leaves off, art takes over. Reykjavik's galleries and an unusual array of museums are complemented by a lively theatre and concert scene. The city’s varied nightlife is legendary and at the weekends the 120 or so bars and clubs generally fill up around midnight, with the fun-loving inhabitants having fun through until breakfast time.

And of course no trip to Iceland would be complete without a visit to the world famous Blue Lagoon which can be added to your itinerary either on the way into the city or on your return journey to the international airport.

It really was one of our best holidays ever. The best part was the Super Jeep tour, which had exactly the right car seats for the children.

Mr Warner, Reykjavik City Break

Our trip to Iceland was truly awesome and the whole trip went extremely smoothly. The Icelandic people were brilliant. Iceland is a fantastic destination for a break, especially for out door types like myself.

Mrs Francis, Reykjavik City Break

Iceland provided the perfect setting for me to propose, we were delighted with the whole experience and I certainly look forward to travelling again with you.

Useful Information

Reykjavik has more than its fair share of festivals and special events, with new ones popping up almost yearly - here are details of some of the more popular.

Independence Day (17 June 2018) the National Day, to mark when independence was declared from Denmark in 1944. The greatest celebrations are in Reykjavik with parades, street theatres and music and dancing.

Summer Solstice (21 June 2018) local festivals mark the longest day of the year, as authentic as they would have been in the Viking age with people demonstrating arts and crafts, food, song and dance etc.

Gay Pride (8-13 Aug 2017, 2018 date tbc) the second biggest festival in Iceland brings tens of thousands of people to Reykjavik to show solidarity. Tourists and locals join in and watch the colourful Grand Parade.

Reykjavik Jazz Festival (9-13 Aug 2017, 2018 date tbc) a 5-day festival presenting live performances of traditional and contemporary jazz in venues around the city, featuring international stars and up-and-coming local talent.

Cultural Night (19 Aug 2017 - 2018 date tbc) thousands of people converge on the streets and enjoy a night of traditional plays, performance art, special events at galleries, cafés, bars and an impressive fireworks display.

Reykjavik Marathon (19 Aug 2017, 18 Aug 2018) participants from all over the world run either a full or half marathon, or a 4.3 mile ‘fun run’. The official programme starts at noon and continue into the early hours.

Iceland Airwaves (1-5 Nov 2017) what started as a showcase for local DJs has evolved into an international music festival across downtown Reykjavik which presents the hottest new bands from the USA, Europe and Iceland.
