The Arctic Highlights voyage gives you the best chance of seeing the Northern Lights while experiencing an adventure within the Arctic Circle. It takes you on the world-famous Hurtigruten shipping route and traces the dramatic Norwegian coastline from Tromso to Kirkenes and back again, providing ample opportunities for spotting the spectacular aurora, as well as several optional excursions available to enhance the journey.

  • Northern lights 'alert system' onboard
  • Flight inclusive packages
  • Good choice of onshore excursions throughout
  • Stunning fjord, mountain and Arctic scenery
  • Comfortable accommodation and spacious communal areas onboard

The Hurtigruten Arctic Highlights inclusive package operates in the winter and has set departure dates from several regional airports in the UK. As well as offering a variety of daytime activities (through shore excursions - not included) and sights - the northern lights prove the biggest attraction.

Hurtigruten ships are working vessels which call in at different ports throughout the day and night, transporting goods and passengers. More than just a means of travel for the locals between remote ports, this route and the ships that sail up and down it year round have become a popular way for visitors to explore the region. One of the draws of travelling this route is that you are always in eyeshot of the remarkable scenery of coastal Norway.

This popular winter voyage stops at over 20 ports taking you from the vibrant Arctic town of Tromso, up the coast to the North Cape and on to Kirkenes, just near the Russian border. Along the way there are many excursions you can pre-book, ending with your final night back in Tromso.

There is a choice of cabin category (subject to availability), all on half board basis and itineraries can be extended with an extra night spent in Tromso (selected dates only). Please refer to the departure section for details when the direct flights are operating from and to.

Ship facilities

The Hurtigruten fleet consists of 12 ships, with many operating on these winter voyages. The ships vary from older, beautifully authentic vessels to larger and more modern ships. Although cabins have private facilities, berths may be either twin or bunk. You will be advised the name of the ship at the time of booking, however this will be subject to change. The standard of onboard accommodation and facilities is consistently high and the atmosphere informal and relaxed. The large, comfortable lounges offer excellent views through enormous windows and there is ample deck space so whether you're admiring beautiful untouched scenery by day, or watching surreal dancing lights at night, you'll have plenty of room to manoeuvre.

An excellent choice of shore excursions is available. Although they can be booked onboard, it is strongly advisable to do this at the time of booking your holiday to ensure availability.

Itinerary & Accommodation

Day 1: arrive Tromso
Fly to Tromso and take the transfer to join Hurtigruten which sets sail at 18:30.
Day 2: Honningsvag and the North Cape
Sail through the scenic Mageroysund and after an early stop in Hammerfest, you arrive in Honningsvag in the late morning. This small port is the gateway to the wonderful North Cape, a mere 2,000 km from the North Pole. The optional excursion to the 307m high plateau gives you a feeling of being at the end of the world. The ship continues north, sailing in the heartland of the indigenous Sami people. In the evening you pass Finnkirka, a sacred rock formation for the Sami people. If you are lucky local fishermen from village Kjollefjord may visit to share their catch of the day (King crab and cod). Perhaps join a guided snowmobile trip (optional) to one of Europe’s most extreme natural areas and get an insight on how the Sami survive in this area. The day ends at Berlevag, arriving late in the evening.
Day 3: Kirkenes, the voyage turning point
The vistas become more dramatic as you approach Kirkenes, just a few kilometres from the Russian border and the turning point on the voyage. Kirkenes boasts several fascinating museums and spending time here gives you an opportunity to take part in some fabulous optional Arctic excursions. You can visit the Snowhotel, explore the landscape by snowmobile or try husky sledding through the wilderness.

Departing at lunchtime, the ship now heads south retracing its steps along the Varanger peninsula, this is one of the most attractive and popular bird-watching areas in the Arctic due to it being directly in the path of birds migrating from east to west. You continue to Batsfjord before reaching Berlevag in the evening.
Day 4: Hammerfest and Tromso
In the middle of the night you dock at Mehamn, where it is possible to join an unforgettable snowmobile trip in the polar light (optional). Experience the snow-clad valleys, fresh winter air and perhaps the northern lights in the starry sky. Travelling on to Hammerfest you can join a guided city tour and see the Unesco listed Meridian Column (optional). Continue south to Oksfjord, the crew will teach you how to tie maritime knots on deck. After crossing open water, make a brief stop at Skjervoy before sailing on to Tromso known as the “gateway to the arctic”, just in time to join the Midnight concert at the Arctic Cathedral (optional) or transfer to the hotel for an overnight stay.
Day 5: Depart Tromso
After breakfast, take time to explore this fascinating town or join one of the many optional excursions available before joining the transfer back to the airport for the flight home.

The 6 day itinerary includes an extra day in Tromso either at the end or at the beginning on the trip, depending on schedule. Please see Prices & Departures for more details.
