Norway Northern Lights Holidays

With its soaring mountains, sheer-sided fjords and endless dark skies, Northern Norway is a beautifully dramatic destination to go in search of the aurora.

Boasting both the northern most city in the world, as well as mainland Europe’s northernmost point, its location high above the Arctic Circle provides ample opportunities for seeing the northern lights. To experience the full magic of the night skies, it’s important to be in remote areas - and we've created our aurora holidays with this in mind.

Where to see the Northern Lights in Norway

  • At 68 degrees, high above the Arctic Circle, the Lofoten Islands provide a dramatic back drop for the northern lights, with glacier-carved peaks and narrow inlets, dotted with picturesque fishing villages.
  • Venture to Finnmark, Norway’s northernmost county, by Hurtigruten coastal cruise. You’ll voyage along the rugged coast all the way to up to North Cape. At night huge vistas from the decks provide the canvas for often spectacular aurora displays dancing above a dramatic landscape of mountains and islands.
  • The bustling city of Tromso is a popular winter break destination, however highly recommend joining an escorted northern lights hunt to take you well away from the city lights. Alternatively, team Tromso with Spitsbergen, the largest island of the Svalbard archipelago, for a true taste of the Arctic!

With extensive knowledge and first-hand experience our Norway Travel Specialists are on hand to help you plan your own aurora adventure, whether you want an 'off the peg' trip or prefer a tailor made holiday.

Top tip from our Norway Specialists

"If you're serious about seeing the northern lights, take a guided trip. In Alta they don't chase the lights, they chase the weather, calling ahead to the next village searching for clear skies. Spotting a star is the first sign that hopefully the lights will be next!"

"The Trollfjord ship was really comfortable and the crew were all friendly and helpful. We were so pleased we saw the Northern Lights!"

Everyone told us how beautiful it is but we weren’t prepared for just how stunning the mountains, fjords and waterfalls really are.
