The Original Icehotel
Just 20 minutes from Kiruna, the village of Jukkasjarvi is home to the world-famous Icehotel.
Forged using thousands of tonnes of ice from the frozen River Torne, the seasonal Icehotel is reborn each winter. Sculptors transform its interior into exquisite ice art – the fabulous suites enchanting guests for a few months before the unique creation melts back into the river. A spectacular new addition, Icehotel 365 is a permanent ice experience with an ice bar, ice gallery and ice suites.
We fell under the spell of the Icehotel when it was first created in 1990. Now, 27 years later, Discover the World is proud to be its leading worldwide partner. Not only can we can get you there quicker and in more comfort than any other operator (thanks to our exclusive direct flights), but our special partnership also means we can guarantee accommodation during busy periods.
As well as the source of the Icehotel, the frozen River Torne also inspires adventure. Driving husky teams or snowmobiles along the wide, sinuous ribbon of ice, spending a night or two in a wilderness lodge, is one of the pure and simple pleasures of Swedish Lapland.
Our Travel Specialists can advise you on the choice of rooms at the Icehotel, including the stunning ice suites and the various options for warm accommodation. We can also tailor make an action plan for you so that you arrive at this iconic place, travelling independently but fully prepared to experience its magic, with a Discover the World representative available to make sure everything runs smoothly for you.
Abisko National Park
With no light pollution and frequent cloudless skies, this mountain wilderness is renowned for its displays of the aurora borealis – and makes a perfect partner with the Icehotel. The Abisko Mountain Station has grand views across Lake Tornetrask and surrounding fells, while a chairlift ride to the Aurora Sky Station puts you on top of the world when the northern lights are blazing away.
Our special partnership with Abisko Mountain Station – the only hotel in the national park – means we can offer you exclusive accommodation during the northern lights watching season.
Abisko is also great in the autumn, when the birch trees turn a vibrant range of golds and yellows. In October and November, autumn colours are replaced by glistening frosts and the first snowfalls of the season.
Why is Abisko so good for northern lights watching?
For starters, Abisko is right in the middle of the auroral oval at 68 degrees north, but it also lies in a rain shadow which means there are fewer clouds and more nights of clear skies. Being a national park means there is no artificial light pollution, while the Aurora Sky Station puts you in the perfect spot for gazing at the night sky.
Huddled around bays and inlets on Sweden’s Gulf of Bothnia, Lulea is the gateway to a beautiful, undiscovered corner of Swedish Lapland. We offer a range of holidays to the Lulea archipelago and forest areas further inland, staying in a hand-picked selection of outstanding lodges.
Brandon Lodge & Pine Bay Lodge
When the Gulf of Bothnia freezes over, the Lulea archipelago becomes icebound and on one island, Brandon Lodge becomes a wilderness retreat buzzing with winter activities. Our four-night Winter’s Dream at Brandon Lodge includes a husky safari, snowmobiling trip and northern lights sled tour. Brandon’s sister property, Pine Bay Lodge is located on the mainland shore and offers intimate accommodation with just 10 guest rooms.
Recommended Holiday: Winters Dream at Brandon Lodge
Ingeniously designed and exquisitely crafted, seven treehouses seem to float through the forest at this contemporary wilderness retreat, about 90km from Lulea. They include the Bird’s Nest (a tangled ball of branches blending into the trees), the gravity-defying capsule of the Cabin and the Mirror Cube – camouflaged by reflective walls. The newest addition, the two-bedroom 7th Room, has a lounge area with large picture windows for aurora gazing. Activities range from husky sledding to a soak in a wood-fired outdoor bathtub at the Forest Spa.
